Formula
Worked example
If a value rises from 100 to 120, the change is (120 − 100) ÷ 100 × 100 = 20% increase.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between percentage change and percentage difference?
Percentage change uses the original value as the base and is directional. Percentage difference often compares two values against their average and is used when neither value is the baseline.
How is a percentage decrease calculated?
Use the same formula. If a value falls from 200 to 150, the change is (150 − 200) ÷ 200 × 100 = −25%, which is a 25% decrease.
What if the original value is zero?
A percentage change from zero is mathematically undefined because the formula divides by the original value. Choose a non-zero baseline or compare the absolute difference instead.
Can the result be negative?
Yes. A negative result means the new value is lower than the original value; a positive result means it increased.
