Average Calculator

Find the mean of a list of numbers.

About this tool

This average calculator finds the arithmetic mean of a comma-separated list of numbers. The mean is useful for comparing test scores, expenses, measurements or repeated observations, provided the values are meaningfully comparable.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter numbers separated by commas, such as 10,20,30.
  2. Check that each entry is a valid number.
  3. Select Calculate to view the mean, number of entries and their sum.

Formula

Arithmetic mean = Sum of all values ÷ Number of values

Worked example

For 10, 20 and 30, the sum is 60 and there are 3 values, so the mean is 60 ÷ 3 = 20.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate an average?

Add all values and divide the sum by how many values there are. For example, the average of 4, 8 and 12 is 24 ÷ 3 = 8.

Does the mean equal the median?

Not always. The mean uses every value, while the median is the middle value after sorting. A very large or small outlier can pull the mean.

Can I enter decimal numbers?

Yes. Separate entries with commas and use a decimal point for fractional values.

What happens if one entry is not a number?

Invalid entries should be removed before relying on the result. Review your list carefully to avoid accidentally excluding or misreading a value.
